Planting a new tree in your yard can add color, shade, and interest to your landscape. Depending on what you plant, you might even get a supply of fresh fruit to enjoy. However, it’s not always as simple as choosing a pretty tree and placing it in any available space. Planting a tree in the wrong spot can create tree maintenance issues in years to come, or even keep it from growing healthy and strong. Here’s how to identify the right place.

How to Find the Perfect Spot for a New Tree

1. Factor in the Environment

Every tree species has requirements for light, water, and soil. For example, some trees need as much sun as possible, while others can thrive with only a few hours of light per day. Evaluate your yard to find the location that is closest to the tree’s requirements. Take note of how much direct sunlight the spot gets each day, how well the soil drains, and the composition of the soil (For example, is it especially sandy or wet?) so the tree can thrive.

2. Consider the Species

For example, a mango tree will produce delicious fresh fruit, but when the ripe mangoes fall from the tree onto your car or into your swimming pool, they can become a problem. Falling coconuts or palm fronds can also be dangerous, especially in high winds. Any species that drops flowers, fruit, or sap can create tree maintenance issues or cause damage, but locating those trees away from the driveway, sidewalk, or other structures eliminates such headaches.

3. Evaluate Structures

Although your new tree might be small now, it will grow. Root systems can spread up to 10 times the height of the tree, and potentially damage sidewalks, driveways, foundations, underground utilities, and other structures as they grow. Keep in mind the tree’s expected mature height, and how it might affect your home’s roof or deck. Planting too close to your home can mean extra tree maintenance to avoid damage from falling branches or leaves.
