Your roof protects your home from heavy weather, but the summer sun and storms can still take their toll. Take extra steps to keep your roofing intact and help prevent water damage and repair bills down the road.

How to Keep Roofing in Shape During the Summer

1. Get UV Protection

Some materials like wood shakes and asphalt shingle roofing deteriorate in sunlight. The UV radiation from the sun bleaches them, then turns them brittle, causing them to break down.

Applying a UV-resistant coating and renewing it when it cracks will provide extra protection and waterproofing. Keep in mind that materials like metal and slate are naturally UV-resistant and don’t need this type of coating.

2. Prepare for Heavy Weather

RoofingHawaiian summers are known for heavy thunderstorms with high winds and pouring rain. Trim back your trees so they won’t hit your shingles or drop branches during a storm. Clean out your gutters regularly to allow the rainwater to flow off your roof and away from your home.

3. Inspect & Repair

Before storm season and after each storm, call a roof maintenance professional for an inspection. They’ll look for loose or missing shingles, weakened materials, gutter damage, or sagging rafters. Repair any problems as soon as they arise; a small repair now can save you from much worse damage in the future by eliminating weak points in your roof.
