A brick patio is a beautiful addition to your yard. It expands your home’s usable square footage, creating an outdoor space with endless potential for entertaining or relaxing. Building your own brick patio is simple. Gather your masonry supplies and get started on your project with the steps below.

4 Key Steps of Building a Brick Patio

1. Prepare the Base

Measure out the area where the patio will be and put down stakes in each of the corners. If the yard has grass, use a sod lifter to remove the grass from the entire patio area. Remove any larger obstructions like rocks, and level the dirt with shovels and rakes. The area should be excavated to eight inches deep. Tamp down the dirt.

2. Lay Edging & Sand

Measure the length of each edge of the patio and cut the plastic paver edging to size. Lay the edging down and hammer it in with spikes.

Once the edging is secure, pour sand in the area and distribute it evenly with a rake. The sand should be one inch deep. Smooth it out with a piece of lumber or a leveler.

3. Lay Masonry Supplies

4. Fill the Gaps

Spread a thin layer of sand dust over the patio. Using a broom, push the sand into the gaps between the bricks. Fill the gaps entirely, then soak the patio with a hose or pressure washer. Once it dries and the sand has settled, repeat the process until the gaps are full.
