As fall approaches, prepare your HVAC system for the cold season. Routine maintenance helps prevent malfunctions and keeps the equipment efficient when you need it for heating. The guide below contains a list of steps you should take before turning on the heat.

3 Ways to Prepare Your HVAC System for Fall

1. Clean the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit of your HVAC system houses the compressor and condenser, which are responsible for removing heat from your home in the summer and keeping it warm in the winter.

Since the component lives outdoors, leaves, dirt, dust, and other debris can clog the parts and impede airflow. To prevent this, vacuum the floor around the unit. Remove any leaves stuck to the vents, then trim back branches extending toward it to keep the area clear.

2. Change the Air Filters

hvacDirt and dust that collect on the air filters bog down the system, causing it to work less efficiently. Continually operating an HVAC system with dirty filters can also result in excessive wear and reduce the life span of the device.

To preserve the equipment and improve your indoor air quality, change the air filters every three months. If you have pets, switch them every 30 days to account for fur and dander.

3. Test the Heater

Most homeowners don’t think about heating until the cold weather arrives. However, testing the furnace before the first cold day of the season helps you identify potential issues that need repairs.

Set your thermostat to heat and allow the system to run for at least 30 minutes. If the equipment doesn’t adequately heat your household, schedule furnace repairs to stay comfortable throughout the fall.
