Savvy homeowners understand the importance of winterizing their outdoor water supply before the cold weather hits. However, when springtime approaches, taking certain precautions to prepare your faucets for regular use is critical to avoid burst pipes and flooding resulting in potentially costly plumber repairs. Before running your garden hose, use the guide below to learn how to prepare your water for springtime use.

3 Tips for Safe Springtime Water Use

1. Open Water Shutoff Valve

If you were diligent about turning your water off before the winter, you'll need to open the valves to get your outdoor water running again.  Water shutoff valves are typically found in your crawlspace, basement, or utility room. Each spigot in your yard will have its own shutoff valve, so make sure you open them all.

Before opening a valve, turn the corresponding outdoor faucet on to help you identify any leaks that might have formed during the winter. Make sure you tighten any bleeder valves that were loosened when you initially shut your water off.

2. Prepare Your Spigots

plumberOnce the water supply has been restored and you've inspected for indoor leaks, remove any frost protective covers and open the water supply valve from your outdoor spigot. Let the water run for at least 60 seconds to allow air to escape from the pipes and ensure the water is flowing steadily with full pressure, as low pressure can usually indicate a leak in your plumbing. Once the water is flowing steadily, turn it off and reconnect your garden hose, as needed.

3. Watch The Weather

Springtime weather is usually unpredictable, especially in cooler climates that are prone to late-season frost. To avoid calling your plumber to repair a burst pipe, monitor your local forecast, and prepare to turn on your indoor water line once again if temperatures drop below freezing. Once the water has been turned off again, turn on your outdoor spigot and drain any water that has built up within the pipes and your garden hose.
