Introducing your children to a variety of foods is an important part of expanding their palates. In the process, you may notice some adverse reactions, which can be the early signs of a food allergy. It’s important to recognize these so you can monitor any future side effects. Below are a few of the most common allergies and how a health care professional can help.

3 Food Allergies Parents Should Be Aware Of

1. Nuts

Peanuts and tree nuts, like pistachios, walnuts, almonds, are a common allergen. Your child could be allergic to only one or several. Reactions from ingesting these nuts account for 50% of deaths related to anaphylactic shock, which is why it’s crucial that you have your child tested. Children or parents of children who experience this allergy will often carry an epinephrine pen to use to stop anaphylaxis if nuts are accidentally consumed.

2. Cow’s Milk

health-care-dumasCow’s milk is the most common food allergy and is difficult to manage since it’s an ingredient in many dairy products. It can be found in yogurt, cheese, butter, and is a common ingredient in sweets. If your child has an allergy, they may experience stomach cramps, vomiting, have a runny nose, or present with facial swelling. They may also develop a skin rash.

Children with this allergy tend to have a reaction with 30 minutes of ingesting the product. A health care professional can provide allergy testing to determine the severity and educate you on ways to avoid accidentally exposing your child to cow’s milk.

3. Eggs

Eggs are the second most common food allergy and, like cow’s milk, are an ingredient in many meals. Children may develop stomach aches or hives after ingesting eggs. In severe cases, they may develop dangerous respiratory reactions. Egg allergies can vary with some children being allergic to only egg whites, only egg yolks, or both. A doctor can help you determine which your child is reacting to, so you can adjust their diet accordingly.
