Good oral hygiene provides a confidence boost while contributing to an overall healthier life. Whether you’re going for a regular cleaning or a more involved procedure, prepare for the visit ahead of time. It will make an appointment with the dentist more efficient and ensure every question gets answered. 

What Should You Do Before Going to the Dentist? 

1. Maintain the Routine

In the weeks leading up to the appointment, maintain a normal dental hygiene regimen. It should include brushing twice a day and flossing once a day.

Sometimes, patients get nervous and attempt to overcompensate before their visit. If you haven’t been flossing, starting just before the appointment will not make a difference. Neither will brushing more forcefully. These actions will only irritate the gums and wear away at the enamel of the teeth. 

2. Organize the Paperwork

DentistIf it’s your first visit to this dentist, have the records from the previous one transferred. Write up a list of any changes in health, medication, and insurance.

For the first appointment, it’s best to be early. The staff will need forms to be filled out. Having a prepared list of information will get the paperwork finished sooner. 

3. Avoid Eating

Try not to eat at least an hour before the appointment. Even after brushing, remaining food particles can still be lodged between the teeth, creating an unpleasant odor. 

If the appointment is after lunch or in the evening, do try to brush after a meal. To prevent bad breath, use a travel-sized mouthwash, mints, or breath strips. 

Avoid sugary foods (including carbohydrates) and caffeinated beverages. Sugars cause more plaque to build up in the mouth while many caffeinated drinks stain the teeth. This will prolong the appointment and make it more difficult for the dentist to detect any hidden issues. 

4. Stay Calm

Dental anxiety is normal for anyone, regardless of their age. It’s another reason to avoid caffeine on the day of the visit. While it’s a useful source of energy, it can also magnify the anxiety. 

Speak openly to the dentist about any fears and questions. They’ll understand the anxiety and help ease the situation. 

When afraid, people often hold their breath on reflex. The reduction in available oxygen increases anxiety. Taking slower breaths will relax both the body and mind.

Agree on a hand signal to use if the procedure becomes overwhelming. The doctor will stop and let you regain your composure. 

Listening to soothing music in a pair of headphones will also help calm rattled nerves and provide a pleasant distraction.
