With the heat of summer, your central air system ensures the home stays cool and comfortable. However, if your AC unit seems to be underperforming or is blowing warm air from the registers, you may have a problem with the condenser. Below are a few common problems that can affect this component.

Why Is A Central Air Condenser Not Working?

1. Dirty Coils

As the condenser pulls in the surrounding air, it can also attract dust and other airborne particles. If these particles collect on the coils and fins for long enough, they limit the amount of air that can pass through the system. At the start of each summer season, turn off power to the condenser unit, vacuum debris out of the condenser fins, and unscrew the top grill. Use a garden hose to spray off the fins and coils gently. After the unit dries, reinstall the screen and turn on the power.

2. Poor Ventilation

central airThe outdoor unit doesn’t provide the most curb appeal, so you may try to hide it by growing bushes or ornamental grass nearby. However, crowding the unit with foliage can reduce air intake and decrease the overall efficiency of your air conditioning system. You should leave at least two feet on each side of the unit so it can pull in enough surrounding air and allow the condenser to cool it.

3. Low Coolant

If the condenser is clean and well-ventilated, but the air coming from your vents still seems lukewarm, you may have low coolant in the unit. This can occur because of a refrigerant leak in the condenser or the evaporator coils. Common signs of a leak include a hissing sound from the outdoor unit and frozen buildup on evaporator coils. It may also lead to higher energy bills, as the air conditioner must work harder to cool the home.
