When you want to perfect your smile, orthodontic solutions aren’t always the most appropriate options. For cosmetic imperfections, such as chipped or misshapen teeth, porcelain veneers often make more sense. Dentists can place these coverings over existing teeth to create a brighter, more even smile. Despite their popularity, some people avoid veneers because of a few common misconceptions.

A Guide to Misunderstandings About Veneers

1. Veneers Look Fake

In the past, some veneers may have looked less than natural. This could’ve been due to improper fit, selecting the wrong color, or lack of shaping.

dentistHowever, today’s cosmetic dentists are committed to creating veneers that look as close to real teeth as possible. Dentists use veneers that are created in a lab to fit the patients’ teeth and match the color of their smile, so the coverings are comfortable and natural-looking.

2. The Process Is Painful

When veneers are applied, the process requires removing some of the existing tooth enamel so the porcelain can fully bond to the teeth. For many people, this process might sound painful. However, only about a millimeter of enamel is removed, and your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb any discomfort.

3. They Stain More Easily

Natural tooth enamel is porous, and thus susceptible to stains from wine, coffee, and foods like red sauce. Tooth whitening can help, but regular maintenance is required to maintain the results. While you might guess that porcelain veneers would be more prone to staining, the opposite is true. Porcelain is not porous, and thus your new smile will maintain its white appearance for longer.

Veneers can actually make your teeth stronger as well. They add an extra layer of support, which can help your teeth resist cracking and breaking if you grind them.
