Braces are a fantastic way to improve your smile permanently, but wearing them requires some work. Many patients find it challenging to keep their teeth clean since maneuvering around brackets and wires can be challenging. Here are four tips your dentist wants you to know for maintaining good oral hygiene while wearing braces.

What Are the Best Tips for Cleaning Teeth With Braces?

1. Brush & Floss Properly

Everyone should brush at least twice a day for two minutes, but it’s particularly crucial when you have braces. Food particles can easily get caught in the brackets, increasing the risk of plaque and tartar buildup. Remove bands or other removable parts before brushing. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and use gentle, circular motions to clean the teeth, tongue, and gums. It’s best to use an electric toothbrush, as these tend to clean teeth more efficiently. Change your brush head every three months  as brackets can wear out the bristles. Use waxed threader floss at least once a day to get under the wire and remove particles lodged between the teeth. Waxed floss is best as it will not get stuck in the brackets.

2. Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash isn’t a substitute for brushing or flossing, but it is a great supplement. Use a dentist-approved, non-alcohol variety, preferably with fluoride. Swish for about 30 seconds before spitting it out to remove oral bacteria and maintain fresh breath. You can rinse after flossing and between brushings throughout the day. However, don’t rinse after brushing your teeth as this can remove the fluoride toothpaste.

3. Consider an Interdental Cleaner

4. Schedule Regular Check-Ups

While at-home oral hygiene can significantly reduce your risk of cavities and other concerns, brushing and flossing aren’t sufficient. You’ll also need regular teeth cleanings. At these appointments, your dentist will also check for problems such as cavities, irregular tooth wear, or fractures. They may also apply a protective sealant or fluoride treatment to safeguard against bacteria.
