Lobster is one of the most popular dishes offered at a seafood restaurant. Its reputation as a high-end meal is widely known, but people often don’t know much else about the creature. Before you go out to enjoy these tasty crustaceans, learn some fun facts you can share with the table.

Lobster Trivia

1. They Never Stop Growing

These crustaceans grow by molting; they tear their way out of their old shells. While they do so, they absorb water and expand. They then grow new shells that fit their larger bodies.

Scientists don’t know exactly how long lobsters live, but it’s estimated they can reach 100 years of age. During this time, they never stop molting, so some may grow to over three feet in length.

2. They Don’t Feel Pain

3. They Lay a Lot of Eggs

These crustaceans reproduce by laying eggs. The average one-pound female can carry around 8,000 eggs, while larger lobsters may have more than 100,000 eggs.

After the eggs are fertilized, a female carries them under her tail for another nine to 12 months. Once they hatch, the larvae float near the surface for four to six weeks, and the rare few that survive float back down to the sea bottom.
