Many busy drivers take a chance when the needle on the fuel meter hovers above ‘E,’ but this is often a recipe for running out of gas. This isn’t the end of the world though, and before you call a tow truck, there are a few steps you can take to protect yourself and your vehicle and make your way home as quickly as possible.

How to Get Back on Your Way When You’ve Run Out of Gas

1. Get Away From the Road

As soon as you’ve come to a complete stop, apply the emergency brake, turn on your hazard lights, and deploy your reflectors, if you have them. Then, make sure the road is clear, get out and onto the shoulder, and put as much distance as possible between you and the road to stay safe and visible.

2. Determine Your Location

Check for road signs, mile markers, landmarks, or other indications of where you might be. Even if you’re in an unfamiliar area, letting AAA or a tow truck know this information will allow you to get help more quickly and efficiently.

3. Call Roadside Assistance

Call a roadside assistance service as soon as you can. If you’re unsure of whether you’re subscribed to such a service or not, check your insurance paperwork. It’s a common add-on for many insurance policies, so have a look at getting in touch with them for help.

4. Let Family & Friends Know Where You Are

For those without roadside assistance, a friend or family member nearby may be able to help you reach the nearest gas or service station for help or fuel. Even if you’re waiting for a tow truck, it’s wise to let someone close to you know your location, so they don’t worry unnecessarily.

5. Call for a Tow Truck

If all else fails, call a reliable towing service to get you to the nearest gas station. They can easily be contacted through AAA® or a similar organization. Or, you may have enough of a signal to search online. However you find them, you can get to a safe place to get some fuel and finish your journey.
