I bet you’re all tired of hearing about the weather. After a long and arduous winter in New York City, it’s not uncommon to obsessively check the weather forecast four or five times a day to make sure that sunny 60-degree day isn’t just an illusion before the next storm hits. Now that it is April, it’s time to put those now irrational fears aside and start worrying about the next weather concern, the upcoming hot and disgustingly humid summer months in NYC.

As proud residents of New York City since 1940, Berk Trade & Business School has that classic love/hate relationship with the city and its erratic seasonal weather. They’ve been training the electricians, plumbers, and engineers that help the city operate no matter what the weather is for generations, and they continue to do so with comprehensive, vocational programs at the technical school’s Manhattan campus. As experienced educators of some of the city’s most well-qualified plumbers and electricians, Berk has some advice for frustrated residents dreading those expensive summer bills.

To put your mind at ease, here are four quick tips to save you money on your electricity bill:

  1. Appliances: There are three appliance and electronic related tips to follow for a lower energy bill. Put your devices in sleep mode whenever possible, unplug chargers when they’re not being used, and consider upgrading (or talking to your landlord) about upgrading to Energy Star appliances which can help you save big money!
  2. Curtains: Keep your curtains closed during the day to keep your apartment from heating up during sunny days. If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, it’s a fun idea to plant a small tree by your window to filter excessive sunlight. It you’re like most NYC residents, you can simply put a few plants by your windowsill for the same effect. They’ll love the sunlight and you’ll love the extra cash.
  3. Adjust Your Air: Don’t be intimidated by your air conditioning controls. If you can’t get it to the timer setting you want on your own, call your superintendent or landlord to help. There’s no reason to leave your air on all the time. In fact, it’s a big waste of money (and energy). Change your settings for nighttime, daytime, and vacation hours to lower you electricity bills this summer

Berk Trade & Business School also suggests a maintenance check-up before the weather gets hot. Have one of NYC’s great electricians pay a visit to assess the status of your filters and the overall energy efficiency of your home. The cost of having professional advice will be well outweighed by the money you’ll save this summer. If you’re interested in becoming one of those highly sought-after professionals, visit the technical school online for information about adult educational programs.
