Summer is nearly here, which means it’s time to prepare for hours of outdoor fun. Whether your child likes to play in the yard or attends a child care center, take some measures to protect them from the sun. The following guide covers all you need to know to enjoy the season safely.

Why Do Kids Need Sun Protection?

While some sun exposure produces healthy vitamin D, too much can be harmful. Ultraviolet (UV) rays, which include UVA and UVB rays, contribute to skin cancer. UVA rays also cause wrinkles, sun spots, and other signs of premature aging, while UVB rays cause sunburns and eye problems.

The longer your little one spends outside without protection, the higher the risk of sunburn and long-term effects. A few serious burns during childhood increase the risk of diseases later in life. Sunscreen is designed to block UV rays and keep people of all ages safe.

How Can You Protect Your Child This Summer?

Before going outchild care center, apply sunscreen to all parts of exposed skin at least 30 minutes before sun exposure. Use a water-resistant product with broad-spectrum protection, which blocks both UVA and UVB rays, and a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Reapply it every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

Try to avoid outdoor activities during the sun’s peak hours, or between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you are out, keep your child in shaded areas. Wide-brimmed hats help shield the face, ears, neck, and scalp. To protect the eyes, have your child pick out a pair of sunglasses in a fun color or shape, but ensure the pair offers 100% UV protection. With these accessories, your little one is fully equipped for safe summer fun.
