When you move into an apartment rental, you may not feel like you have enough space. However, some simple methods can make small spaces look and feel bigger. Below are several tips to help you create an open, welcoming layout.

How to Make a Small Apartment Look Bigger

1. Choose Light Colors

Many apartments have white walls, and this is because softer colors reflect more natural light. As you pick out furniture, bedding, area rugs, and artwork, stick to a light color palette. These tones make the area feel more open and bright. Dark colors draw too much attention and will make the room feel bulky and cramped. Also, try to keep as much wall space open as possible and place small decor lower to the ground to make ceilings seem higher.

2. Add Shelves

Utilize all available vertical space in your apartment rental. Shelves or thin bookcases are perfect for storing dishware, books, knick-knacks, clothing, and other items that will clutter and take up space elsewhere. As you’re filling out these shelves, create a donation pile for belongings you don’t need. Decluttering also makes a space look more substantial because you will not have as many belongings around the room.

3. Use Mirrors

Hang the mirror across from a window to capture light, or organize a small collection of framed, various-shaped and -sized mirrors on a wall. However, make sure they don’t face doorways, as they are distracting when you enter a room.

4. Pick Small Furniture

Large, blocky furniture legs and frames dominate visual space. Instead, choose tables and chairs with thin legs and skinny bases. These maintain the area beneath tables so that you can see more of the room. Glass or clear options will also remove visual obstructions and improve the flow of sight when looking around.
