Your ignition switch is responsible for getting your car moving, but it can wear down over time. Getting the ignition replaced by an experienced auto repair shop before it fails completely could keep you from getting stuck while away from home. Below are some key signs to watch out for so you know if you need to schedule auto repairs.

How to Tell Your Ignition Is Failing

1. Your Key Won’t Turn

If the key won’t turn, there could be problems with the ignition. Make sure it isn’t locked by wiggling your steering wheel while trying to turn the key. If the key still won’t turn, then excessive wear is keeping the key from lining up properly in the ignition switch, which can only be resolved with auto repair. This is a common problem if you use a heavy keychain that puts stress on the ignition, or if you own an aged vehicle.

2. Your Car Isn’t Starting

If you turn your key and the engine is slow to start or doesn’t catch, it could be due to your ignition switch. The ignition works by drawing power from the battery and sending it to the spark plugs to ignite the fuel, both while starting the car and while the vehicle is running. If the ignition is faulty or corroded, it may struggle to do this, resulting in weak or failed starts or stalling while your car is idling.

3. Dashboard Lights Don’t Turn On

4. Ignition Feels Hot

Your ignition switch is plugged into your car’s electrical system through multiple wires. Corrosion or electrical fault can cause them to overheat, which is signaled by a hot ignition switch. Overheating wires can affect the terminals and melt the insulating base, leading to a shaky ride and failed starts.
