If you have crooked teeth, your dentist may recommend braces. This orthodontic treatment straightens teeth and is used for both health and cosmetic reasons. Read on for answers to common questions that you may have about the process.

Braces FAQ

How do braces work?

Braces use two main parts: a set of brackets cemented to your teeth, and a wire that runs between those brackets. Your dentist will tighten the wire to place mild but constant pressure on your teeth. Over time, that pressure moves the tooth, and the gums and bone tissue reform around it to help it stay in the new position. The treatment usually lasts 18 months to three years.

Who can get braces?

Anyone with leaning or twisted teeth, or with gaps that are too wide or too narrow between the teeth, needs orthodontic treatment such as braces. It’s common to get them as a teen or young adult, but even preteen children or older adults can get them if needed. You should usually have your dentist treat other mouth health issues first, including decay and periodontal disease; this helps protect your teeth and other tissues in your mouth from any damage.

What types of braces are available?

dentistBasic braces use colored brackets. They’re very visible against your teeth, but they come in a range of fun colors or even multicolored options. There are also white ceramic or clear options that are almost invisible. Some dentists even offer lingual braces that are fixed to the backs of your teeth instead of the front.

Why do you need them?

Realigning your teeth makes your smile more attractive, but that’s not the only reason to ask your dentist for orthodontic treatment. Straight, even teeth are easier to clean because they’re not leaning against each other, so you’re less likely to have tooth decay and gum disease. Also, teeth that line up correctly support each other when you bite and chew, so you’re less likely to have a tooth break off or wear down because it sticks out past the others.
