Mold, algae, moss, and other debris can be a serious eyesore on your privacy fence. It can all spread easily and be tricky to remove. Many homeowners damage their fence while trying to clean it, which is why it’s important to follow the proper methods. Here’s a guide to keeping your fence looking like new.

How to Clear Mold From a Fence

1. Pressure-Washing

Pressure-washing removes mold, dirt, and other debris from your privacy fence. It works well on wood, vinyl, and other materials.

The water jet can be extremely powerful, so you’ll need to be careful around gates and areas with hardware. Pressure-washing is often used with other methods because you’ll want to sterilize the fence to clear lingering mold spores.

2. Vinegar & Water

Then, use a soft-bristled cleaner to scrub the area. Be careful using coarse brushes because they may damage vinyl or the paint or sealcoat on wood fences.

3. Bleach & Detergent

If vinegar and water aren’t working, mix 1/4 cup of bleach with 1/4 cup of laundry detergent. The bleach will break down the toughest mold patches, and the laundry detergent will mask the harsh bleach smell.

Bleach can be corrosive, so you’ll want to be careful. Lay down plastic drop cloths and tie back plant branches so that the bleach doesn’t damage your landscaping.
