Important Plant Care Information

During Central Kentucky’s long cool and wet spring, one of the biggest obstacles for gardeners and landscapers has been trying to get planting done while working around frost, hard freezes and rain.  Here are 4 points to consider as we go into summer.

1.  Watering:  March, April and May have had plenty of rainfall, but keep in mind that as the days grow longer and hotter, moisture will evaporate quickly from the soil.  Many plants still have tender new growth that has not yet hardened off from the spring flush, and the need for water remains.  As rainfall declines and temperatures rise, new plants will need about an inch of rain per week, or will need to be hand-watered a few times a week as needed.

2.  Sprinklers:  Avoid watering plants with a sprinkler if you do not have a timer.  It is easy to overwater when using a sprinkler.  The heavy soils in many Central Kentucky areas tend to hold water, and overwatering can set up conditions for diseases, such as root rot.  If you have an irrigation system, check your timers to be sure plants are receiving an appropriate amount.

3.  Bugs!!!  May beetles, Japanese beetles, aphids and spider mites can all be damaging to plants.  Most of the time these plants do rebound, but a plant in stress can succumb to additional stressors, not to mention the cosmetic effect it has on the plant.  Spray as needed.  There is no need to spray if you don’t have an insect problem, but if you do, read the mixing and application instructions of the pesticide you are using.

4.  Fertilizing:  A granular, time-release fertilizer is a good option for fertilizing many landscape plants.    Annuals, vegetable gardens, and many other plants will benefit from a water-soluble fertilizer.  This type of fertilizer will move more quickly into the plant, thus maximizing benefits.  Keep in mind that fertilizing promotes new growth as well as strengthens the root system.  In promoting new growth, be sure to maintain a watering schedule.  Mid-August is a good cut-off time for water-soluble fertilizer applications.
