Updating your bathroom is a remodeling project that can give you big bang for your bucks. Whether you want a more efficient and modern space or just want to create a more relaxing and spa-like environment, bathroom remodels can be as simple or complex as you want. However, there are some limitations, especially when it comes to plumbing. Without the right design and setup for water and sewer, your dream bathroom could become a nightmare.

What to Know Before Starting a Bathroom Renovation

1. Plumbing Determines Layout

When remodeling your bathroom, it may be possible to reconfigure the plumbing and relocate fixtures. That doesn't mean anything goes, though. There may be some limitations based on your home’s size and construction.

For example, you might dream of putting a bathtub under the window, but if the joists supporting the floor need to be cut to allow for a new drain line, that layout won't work. Before you get your heart set on a specific design, consult with a plumber to ensure that the layout will work.

2. Don't Ignore Water Pressure

plumbingAlthough you can expect new fixtures, like showerheads, to work with your existing plumbing, that doesn’t mean they’ll work as designed. By law, showerheads must deliver less than 2.5 gallons of water per minute. If your home has adequate water pressure (most have 45 to 80 pounds of pressure per square inch), then switching from an old fixture to a new model won’t be an issue.

If your water pressure is on the low end, though, installing one of these restrictive fixtures could mean disappointment. Your plumber can measure your water pressure and make adjustments to increase the pressure, such as a pressure-boosting valve.

3. Your Water Heater Might Need an Upgrade

Depending on the upgrades you choose for your new bathroom, your water heater might need to be replaced as well. For example, filling a deep soaking tub can use upwards of 300 gallons of water or more.

If your water heater isn’t capable of meeting the demand, you may find that your “relaxing” soak is a bit on the chilly side. If you’re installing luxury fixtures that will demand more hot water than what you’re currently using, consider switching to a larger water heater, or even a tankless, on-demand one.
