The American Dental Association recommends that children visit the dentist for the first time before their first birthday. However, many kids might feel apprehensive about going to the doctor for a teeth checkup. If your little one has dental anxiety, below are four tips to help them feel more comfortable and confident while at the dentist’s office.

4 Tips to Ease Your Child’s Fear of the Dentist

1. Meet the Dentist Beforehand

Often, children are anxious about situations that they don’t understand. If possible, a few days before their appointment, take them to the dentist’s office to meet some of the staff that will be working with them during their checkup and cleaning. Acclimating your child to the sights and sounds of the office will help them feel more comfortable when they return for their appointment. They may able to see the exam room, the chair they will sit in, and the tools that will be used.

2. Role Play

dentistPlaytime can be an excellent opportunity for education. Help your child learn what to anticipate at the dentist by role-playing a visit. Have them play the patient while you play the dentist and pretend to examine and clean their teeth. Then, switch roles. Letting them play the doctor will give them a sense of control and allow them to feel confident in the chair. You can also encourage them to play dentist with their dolls or use stuffed animals as patients.

3. Teach Them Why It’s Important

Kids are often reluctant to do something they don’t want to do if they don’t understand why it’s necessary. Explain why it’s important to get regular checkups and cleanings to prevent cavities and other gum issues. You can show them photos of people with healthy teeth and explain how positive oral hygiene is key to a bright smile. Answer any questions they have about oral health and hygiene. You can also read them stories about characters who go to the dentist for the first time.

4. Lead by Example

Children tend to follow their parents’ lead. If you express negative emotions regarding your appointments, they’re likely to feel similarly. Try to maintain a positive attitude in front of your kids when discussing the doctor. Also, practice positive teeth cleaning habits and visit the dentist regularly to set a strong example. Use positive verbiage when discussing brushing, flossing, and treatments, such as “clean” and “healthy.”
