Technology is a significant aspect of everyday life, and people with jobs that require computers will spend several consecutive hours per day in front of a screen. This can cause neck pain, stiffness, and soreness from a condition known as “tech neck.” Below is more information about what you should and shouldn’t do to avoid developing tech neck.

Do:

Raise the screen.

Part of what causes tech neck is tilting your head down when working. To combat this, raise your screen to eye level and hold phones and tablets higher while using them. Invest in an adjustable monitor stand, or a laptop dock and wireless keyboard if you use a portable computer. Standing desks are also an excellent way to keep your computer at the right height.

Stretch often.

Stretching and strengthening your muscles helps reduce the strain on your neck. Many quick stretches that you can complete daily will combat tech neck, such as the side neck stretch. For this exercise, stand up straight and relax your neck muscles as you tilt your head to one shoulder. Hold your ear against your shoulder for 10 seconds, then repeat this five times. Switch shoulders and do the same on the other side.

Visit a chiropractor

neck painChiropractors have professional experience helping patients reverse neck pain. They use holistic treatments, such as spinal manipulation and chiropractic mobilization, to address your problem directly. Regular chiropractic care will help treat the issue and improve your posture.

Don’t:

Neglect posture.

A common problem for those who work on computers is poor posture, which leads to neck pain and stiffness. Set reminders on your phone to adjust your stance periodically. Switching to a chair with a comfortable headrest will help you keep your head, neck, and back flush against the seat.

Sit in one position.

Even if you’re sitting with perfect posture, staying in the same position for long periods negatively impacts your body. Movement promotes healthy circulation. If you sit still for many hours, you could inhibit proper blood flow, causing pain in your neck and other areas. Shift your body and move around occasionally to prevent this.

Work nonstop

Working on a lengthy project can make it harder to take breaks, but give yourself a chance to relax. Set reminders on your phone to stand up, walk around, and loosen your muscles every half hour. This will spread out your screen time and prevent stiffness.
