Any time you’re in the sun longer than ten or fifteen minutes, you should wear sunscreen. Doing so can help you prevent everything from sun spots to skin cancer. Here’s what you need to know to choose the right sunscreen for your needs.

Why Is Sunscreen So Important?

Sun SpotsBesides visible light, the sun emits other wavelengths of radiation, including ultraviolet or UV. UV radiation damages your skin. It causes short-term damage in the form of sunburns, mid-term damage like sun spots, and long-term issues, including skin cancer. Quality sunscreen blocks UV radiation from reaching your skin.

How to Determine What SPF You Need

SPF stands for sun protection factor and describes how much the sunscreen slows down damage from UV. For example, a sunscreen with SPF 20 means it will take 20 times as long for you to burn. If you would normally start to burn in 15 minutes, that sunscreen will allow you to stay out in the sun comfortably for five hours, if it’s applied as recommended. Dermatologists widely recommend SPF 30 for everyday use, but you may need a higher factor if you have especially sensitive skin or will be staying out longer.

Features & Ingredients to Look For

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are two common ingredients in sunscreen. They’re natural minerals that are ground up finely. When you apply the sunscreen to your skin, they form a thin layer. They reflect and refract UV radiation, reducing the amount that reaches your skin, so look for them when you choose your sunscreen brand. Also, look for labels that say UVA and UVB or “broad spectrum.” This means the sunscreen blocks the whole spectrum of ultraviolet radiation. Finally, choose a water-resistant formula. Even if you’re not playing in the water, your sweat will wash away your sunscreen, so a waterproof type will last longer.
