Water wells use the natural filtration properties of the soil to weed out microorganisms, heavy metals, and other contaminants. However, they do require extra care and regular attention from water well service professionals. If you have a well, abiding by the following do’s and don’ts will ensure your family has a ready supply of fresh, safe drinking water.

Do:

Have your water tested regularly.

Regular water testing is essential for bringing serious matters to your attention before they damage your plumbing or make members of your household sick. If your water hasn’t been tested in 12 months, has suddenly changed appearance, or your well has recently been repaired, have the water tested by your local health department or a state-certified laboratory. Also, schedule a well inspection with a water well service provider as soon as possible.

Inspect the wellhead.

water well servicesYour well should be sealed by a cap that keeps surface water, insects, and other contaminants out of your water supply. At the beginning of each season, inspect the wellhead carefully to ensure that the cap is intact, and have any damage repaired immediately.

Don’t:

Bury the wellhead.

Many homeowners try to obscure the wellhead by burying it underground or hiding it behind bushes and trees. Either approach can allow surface water or debris to penetrate the well. Ideally, landscaping should be kept several feet away, and the wellhead should be at least 12 inches above ground level.

Store chemicals nearby.

Spilled gasoline, oil, or household cleaners can seep into the groundwater, tainting your well and leaving your water unsafe. Minimize the risk by keeping chemicals and oil storage at least 100 feet away from your water well.
