Bricks add elegance and old-world appeal to many different structures, from homes to gardens. Over time, however, bricks can develop visible signs of damage that may threaten their strength and integrity. Use the guide below to determine when it’s time to call a masonry contractor for repair work.

How to Tell If You Have Damaged Bricks

1. Bulging Bricks

If you notice bricks bulging from their original positions, it could be due to moisture intrusion. Bulging is known as “frost boil” and typically occurs in areas with freezing weather.

Water travels behind the brick, causing the material in the back to soften so much that it eventually loses its grip on the brick. As the water freezes and expands, it pushes the brick outward. A masonry contractor will detach the affected bricks, perform necessary repairs in the back, then install new brickwork.

2. Cracked Bricks

If you notice suspicious gaps in your brickwork, have a masonry contractor fill them. This will stabilize the structure and prevent immediate failure.

3. Mortar Breakdown

Over time, the mortar between the bricks may deteriorate. Widespread loss of integrity can cause the bricks to press against one another, which can affect their shape and ability to withstand pressure. Warped bricks are at risk of crumbling, so it’s crucial to have a mortar repair professional fix crumbling or otherwise damaged areas. This process is known as tuckpointing, and it will restore the appearance of the surface.
