Your driveway is a major feature of your home’s exterior, so it’s important to keep it free of stains. Common stains include oil, tire marks, rust, antifreeze, and other car fluids. Driveway construction techniques, such as sealing, can protect the surface, but if you already have stains, here are a few ways to remove them.

How to Deal With Concrete Driveway Stains

1. Tackle New Stains Quickly

If you notice a new stain on your concrete driveway, address it promptly for a better chance of removing it. First, leave an absorbent substance, such as cat litter or baking soda, on the stain for a few hours to soak it up.

Then clean the remaining stain with liquid dish soap and water. Use a regular scrub brush instead of a wire brush, which can damage the surface.

Add water to the surrounding area of the driveway, so the stain doesn’t spread while you’re cleaning. You might need to repeat the method several times before the stain disappears.

1. Try Laundry Detergent

Powdered laundry detergent is often effective on driveway stains. Cover the stain with detergent, mix it with a little water to spread it, then leave it for 30 minutes to one hour. Scrub the stain well, and wash off the detergent. Repeat the process if necessary.

3. Use a Pressure Washer

Next, put degreaser on the stain and leave it for a few minutes before scrubbing it off. You can then use the power washer along with a detergent.
