Trees can contract diseases, either from years of neglect or from damages due to heavy storms. When this happens, they may create safety hazards around your property or even spread their symptoms to other trees and plants throughout your yard. Tree removal is often the safest option for those with diseases. However, you first need to be able to spot the signs.

How to Tell If a Tree Has a Disease

1. Peeling Bark

Bark protects trees from damage. When they start to rot or contract diseases from nearby pests, the bark is often the first visible sign. A small amount of peeling bark may not be a big deal, but widespread problems indicate that the tree isn’t getting the nutrients it needs. This also leaves the inside of the structure vulnerable to pests and other threats.

2. Fungi

If you notice mushrooms on the trunk, roots, or ground surrounding a tree, it’s a signal that it should be removed before it causes safety issues.

3. Leaf Discoloration

Though it’s normal for leaves to turn colors in the fall, it shouldn’t happen throughout the rest of the year. If you notice yellow or brown leaves in the summer, it could be due to wilting or root rot. If the discoloration is just on one section of the tree, you may be able to have it trimmed to stop it from spreading. However, if there is discoloration throughout, it may need to be fully removed.
