Whether you’re a casual fan or a young athlete, having your own football to throw around is part of the all-American experience. Not all footballs are exactly alike, and to have the most fun with your personal pigskin, you must make the right selection. Here are a few things to consider before stopping by a local sporting goods store to pick up your first football.

What Size Should You Buy?

The footballs used in the NFL must have a circumference of 22 inches and be 11 inches in length. However, younger players may find the official size too cumbersome, which means a smaller size would be in order.

Smaller sizes are broken down according to age. Children under age 6 should use a mini football, while kids ages 6 through 9 are best served by a pee-wee size. Junior sizes cover ages 10 through 12, and youth sizes are good for kids ages 12 through 14.

What Material Should You Choose?

  • Leather – Genuine leather footballs offer the best grip due to their texture. Leather is also extremely rugged, which means it can hold up under intense play for longer.
  • Rubber/Synthetics – If genuine leather is out of your price range, rubber or synthetic leather is a nice alternative. As an added bonus, these materials are also resistant to water.
  • Foam – The least expensive of all the options, foam is a good choice when you’re in search of a starter football. Because foam is lightweight, it’s also a good option for small kids.
