A water well boasts convenience and savings for homeowners. It ensures there is a steady supply of water and forgoes the need to rely on a municipal water system, thereby keeping monthly utility costs down. If you’re purchasing a house with a well, it’s important to learn about the property’s static water and flow rate. While a water well services team can discuss these features with you in greater detail, here’s a brief introduction to prepare you for an informed conversation.

Static Water

A well’s static water level refers to its capacity, or how much water is in the well. You can determine a well’s capacity by measuring its depth, the pump’s depth, and the level of the water. If you’re purchasing a home and the seller cannot provide this information, a water well services expert can determine it for you.

In general, it’s recommended that a well should be able to provide at least five gallons of water for each minute for a period of up to two hours. In other words, the minimum well static water level should be 600 gallons. For larger homes or those with many family members, an even larger capacity may be appropriate.

Flow Rate

Most individuals use up to 100 gallons of water per day in their homes. Various fixtures and appliances require different gallons per minute of use. For instance, a kitchen sink might only require three gallons per minute of use, whereas the shower might require five.

Ideally, a well should be able to provide four gallons per minute for up to four hours. However, well water services professionals may recommend a flow rate of at least five gallons per minute for larger families or homes with increased outdoor water usage, such as those with sprinkler systems.
