During the summer months, air conditioning helps your home to stay cool and comfortable. However, when something goes wrong, your air conditioner may become unreliable or completely non-functional. Here are three signs you may need AC repair, and how being proactive could help you to prevent issues in the long run.

Symptoms of Damaged Air Conditioning Systems

1. Bad Smells

When your home smells less than pristine, you could have an issue with your air conditioner. Exhaust or burning electrical smells could indicate problems with the moving components of your air conditioner, while mold and mildew odors may be caused by a clog in your drainage pan line. Have AC repair professionals inspect your system anytime you notice odors when your system runs.

2. High Indoor Humidity

AC repairHigher humidity levels can make a home feel warmer, which is why one of the functions of an air conditioning system is to remove humidity from the air. As your air conditioner moves air over the cooling coils inside the air handler, circulating refrigerant helps moisture to condensate on the coils and fall into the drip pan, removing humidity.

If your air conditioner doesn’t seem to be removing humidity from your home, your system could have leaks in the refrigerant lines, problems with air movement, or dirty cooling coils. Keep an eye on glass window panes if you are concerned about high humidity since these areas can accumulate condensation and potentially even grow mold and mildew inside a humid home.

3. Strange Noises

Banging, screeching, or grinding sounds when your system runs, starts, or stops could be caused by failing components. Damaged fan blades in the outdoor section of your air conditioner could also create loud air movements. Loose or moving parts could make clanking noises within your system and may damage surrounding components if they are left unrepaired. Pay attention to the way your air conditioner sounds when it operates, and contact an AC repair team if you notice any changes.
