The sebaceous glands are located in the skin of dogs and produce sebum, a substance that moistens the skin and helps with basic immune functions. When a canine has sebaceous adenitis, the glands will become inflamed and may stop functioning altogether. What Are the Symptoms? 

There are a number of signs to look for, such as:

• Whitish scaling on the skin
• Waxy hair
• Sparse or dull fur
• No fur at all
• Lesions on the neck, head, and back
• Itching

Keep in mind that certain breeds are more likely to get sebaceous adenitis than others. For example, Standard Poodles and Belgian Sheepdogs are particularly prone to it. 

What Are the Treatment Options?

While the disease is primarily cosmetic, it’s still important to treat your dog as soon as you notice symptoms. If your furry friend has a mild case, feed them supplements, including eicosapentaenoic acid, omega-3 fatty acid, and docosahexaenoic acid. Additionally, apply humectants to their skin every few days, as well as emollient rinses and keratolytic shampoos. 

In more severe cases, use daily supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acid, spray them with propylene glycol daily, and soak them in mineral oil weekly, bathing them afterward.

While the above treatments won’t necessarily cure the disease, they will keep it to a manageable level. Before beginning the process, see a pet dermatologist for a diagnosis. Sebaceous adenitis has many of the same symptoms as allergic skin disease, so it’s important to have a vet check. 

While there’s no way to prevent sebaceous adenitis, many owners choose to spay or neuter their dog to stop hereditary transmission.
