Protecting your boat from the ravages of the elements requires investing in a quality cover. With so many options to choose from, though, knowing what is best for your vessel can be tricky. If you’re in the market for a new boat cover, here are some features to consider for this vital piece of boat equipment

How to Choose a Cover for Your Boat

1. Purpose

Where you store your boat and whether you transport it on a trailer play a part in choosing the right cover. If you only need a cover during storage, or when your boat is anchored, you can opt for a looser fitting cover. If you plan to trailer the boat—especially at highway speeds—then a tighter, snug-fitting cover is a must.

2. Fabric

It’s also essential for the cover to wick away water and allow air and vapor to escape. The best choice is a synthetic blend of polyester or acrylic, which checks off all the boxes. Avoid covers made from cotton or cotton blends, as they don’t typically hold up well in the long term. Choose a cover made with polyester stitching and straps as well, as they hold up better against the sun’s rays.

3. Color

Although it might seem counterintuitive, choose boat covers in darker shades like black, green, blue, or red. While a dark cover absorbs more heat and transmits it to the equipment underneath, it also absorbs UV rays more effectively than a lighter-colored cover. This ensures it lasts longer and provides more protection for your boat.

4. Size

Size matters when it comes to boat covers. Avoid covers that are too large, as they will collect water and sag or get caught in the wind and tear. Oversized covers can also create hazards when trailering your boat. Covers that are too tight should also be avoided. When the cover is stretched too far, the seams and fabric will stretch, leading to tears. When buying a cover, take careful measurements of the vessel, including any boat equipment that also needs to be covered, to ensure an accurate fit.
