Concrete is an excellent material for your home’s walkways and patios because it’s attractive and durable. However, despite its strength, this material still needs to be maintained. If you have a concrete walkway in your front or backyard, here’s what you can do to prevent damage and preserve it for years to come.

How to Care for Concrete Walkways

1. Apply a Sealcoat

A seal provides your concrete with a protective, water-resistant barrier. This coating shields the material from stains and moisture damage. It’ll also reduce the impact of wear in high-traffic areas, such as the walkway up to your front door or a patio used year round.

2. Clean Regularly

concreteSweep all walkways about once a week to prevent debris, dirt, and mud from accumulating—their particles can damage the surface over time. You should also powerwash the area about once a month to remove stuck-on dirt. Always use a mild soap-and-water mixture on the surface since harsh chemicals, like bleach, may corrode and discolor the material.

3. Address Damage Immediately

Concrete will deteriorate eventually despite an attentive maintenance routine and its durability. Address small fissures once you notice them, as they’ll widen into deep cracks that cause pieces of concrete to break off. Fortunately, a contractor can easily repair and re-seal to prevent further damage.

4. Monitor Nearby Plant Growth

If your yard has trees close to concrete walkways, schedule seasonal maintenance. Tree roots that grow underneath concrete will eventually push up, cracking the material. Avoid the cost of repairs by trimming tree roots regularly.
