Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to protect yourself and everyone you come across while making deliveries.

3 Coronavirus Safety Tips for Truck Drivers

1. Wear a Mask

According to the CDC, wearing cloth face masks minimizes your risk of contracting or transmitting the coronavirus. While you don’t need to wear a mask when you’re inside your truck, cover your mouth and nose every time you stop for food, fuel, or unloading. Simple cloth masks are inexpensive and readily available; they’re found in many truck stops. You can even make your own. 

2. Stay Home if You’re Feeling Sick

During a pandemic, even a slight fever or cough can be cause for concern. If you start developing symptoms, notify your supervisor immediately and stay home in self-isolation until you’ve been tested. This will help contain the spread of the virus and decrease your chances of getting seriously ill out on the road.

3. Avoid Cash

Cash readily picks up viruses, so avoid using it as much as possible when you’re driving. Instead, use a debit card or a contactless option like Google Pay® or Apple Pay®. Minimizing contact with potentially contaminated surfaces like credit card keypads reduces your exposure and increases your chances of getting home safely.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water anytime you leave a public place. For added safety, carry a hand sanitizer with more than 60% ethanol or 70% isopropanol content for when you’re unable to wash.
