While hurricane season in the U.S. reaches its peak in September, homes in vulnerable regions can sustain damage from June through November. If you live in an area of the country prone to hurricanes, you need homeowners insurance that'll cover any resulting losses. Learn what you need to know about home insurance and hurricanes below to make the best decision for your property and family.

What Does Homeowners Insurance Cover?

While there's no option for "hurricane insurance," standard homeowner policies typically cover wind damage from storms of all kinds. Some also cover damage from rain that's extra forceful because of wind, though you should check what your policy specifically includes.

homeowners insuranceNorth Carolina and 18 other states offer hurricane deductibles where homeowners pay specific amounts before their carriers cover the rest. Deductible percentages depend on how much the home is insured for and the property's risk for severe storm damage. For example, if your home is insured for $200,000 and your deductible is 3%, you'll pay $6,000 before your insurance company takes over the costs. These deductibles go into effect when wind speeds exceed 74 miles per hour.

What Doesn’t It Cover?

Homeowners insurance may cover wind damage and related issues, but it doesn't pay for flood damage. As a result, you must purchase separate flood insurance to cover losses from hurricanes and other major storms.

However, keep in mind that this type of insurance doesn't provide compensation for moisture, mildew, and mold damage, nor does it cover damage to property features, such as pools, trees, fences, decks, plants, septic systems, and walkways. Flood insurance also doesn't cover damage to paper documents and money, or provide funds for temporary housing, such hotels, if your home requires extensive repairs.
