The wisdom teeth are the third set of molars in the back of the mouth. Wisdom tooth removal is a common and simple oral procedure that most people need to have done at some point. It is generally needed between the ages of 17 and 25, when these deep molars begin to emerge. They are removed to prevent more serious issues in the mouth.

The Dangers of Skipping Wisdom Tooth Removal

1. Impacted Wisdom Teeth

The teeth become impacted when they get trapped below the gumline and cannot erupt. That impaction can cause a cyst or infection in the jaw, which could lead to permanent bone loss. The infection may damage the roots of adjacent teeth—your other molars—or may cause you to lose part of the jawbone that is required to support the other teeth.

2. Crowding

This forces them out of alignment, causing crooked teeth and an uneven bite. It becomes more difficult to clean in between teeth that are pressed up against each other, increasing the likelihood of tooth decay. Orthodontic care will be required to fix alignment issues.

3. Infection

When wisdom teeth erupt partially through the gums and are unable to fully emerge, they are very difficult to keep clean. Food can get trapped around them, which encourages bacteria to grow in the back of the mouth. This may lead to cavities, gum disease, and infection of your other molars.
