Cutting your grass is fundamental to a proper lawn care routine. However, many homeowners struggle to get into a rhythm with mowing the lawn and aren’t sure about how often the task needs to be done. In general, you’ll know when it’s time to mow your lawn based on its appearance and the time of year. Below, learn some telltale signs that show it’s time for a grass trim.

3 Signs That It’s Time to Mow Your Lawn

1. Height

If you’re familiar with lawn care, you may have heard of the 1/3 rule. This suggestion states that you should never remove more than 1/3 of the lawn’s height when mowing. If you cut the grass too short, it won’t be in prime shape to soak up all the nutrients that it needs. This can result in dead patches and unsightly discolorations. On the flip side, you don’t want your grass to grow too long and appear unkempt. Position your lawnmower blade so that it doesn’t chop off too much grass at one time.

2. Time

lawn careThe answer to how often you should mow your lawn varies, but once per week is a safe bet during the spring and summer months when the grass has plenty of sunshine and moisture to grow. Depending on how quickly your lawn is replenishing itself, you can mow up to two times per week. If you’ve gone a couple of weeks without a trim, it’s wise to cut the lawn so that it stays fresh, healthy, and promotes new growth. If you do notice some sparse patches, put down some grass seeds and avoid mowing that area until there is new growth.

3. Weather

In the hot months, the grass roots need extra insulation against intense heat  and UV rays from the sun. The roots soak up water from the soil to give the grass nutrients, but if the roots aren’t well protected, they can shrivel up and die off. Trimming your grass helps it stay at a healthy length for soaking up all the nutrients that it needs, and prevents the roots from getting overexposed to sunlight.
