While an air conditioner can keep your house cool with the touch of a button, the actual internal process is far more complex. An effective system relies on a variety of components to function properly, and if any part of the system breaks, it can impact the efficiency of your system, requiring AC repairs. Below, learn more about the inner workings of your air conditioner and the importance of routine maintenance.

How the AC System Works

Air conditioners operate by removing the heat inside of your home and replacing it with cool air. During the process, heat is drawn out of your house through a vent where it is blown over an evaporator coil that has been chilled using a cooling agent called refrigerant.

As the refrigerant absorbs the heat from the passing air, it changes from liquid to gas while traveling toward the compressor. As the refrigerant makes its way to the outdoor unit, it is condensed into superheated vapor.

The outside air quickly absorbs the heat, lowering its temperature and changing it from a gas back into a liquid. Once the heat has been removed, the chilled air travels back over the evaporator coil, repeating the process until the air indoors reaches the specified temperature on your thermostat.

Common Issues

Blower motor problems often result in your outdoor unit freezing up. This can also be caused by insufficient airflow, low outside temperatures, or low coolant levels.

Some of the most common issues are caused by dirty air filters, which can lead to insufficient airflow, reduced cooling capacity, higher utility bills, and even system failure caused by an overburdened machine.

The Importance of Annual Maintenance

Routine maintenance is the best way to ensure your AC is running efficiently and to help you avoid costly emergency repairs. A well-maintained system will keep your home cool for many years and cost you less in utility expenses and repairs over time.

While responsible for cooling your home, your AC system also prevents air quality issues. An unmaintained HVAC system can harbor dirt, mold, and bacteria, which can lead to, or worsen, respiratory issues. Clean filters and coils can result in cleaner air throughout your home.
