There are many reasons why a car may not start, which can make identifying and fixing the cause difficult for the average vehicle owner. Here is a breakdown of some of the most common causes auto repair shops see, so you can narrow down the possibilities.

Why Won't Your Engine Run?

1. The Battery Died

The battery powers the car’s electrical components, so if it dies, your car won’t start. The battery can drain if you accidentally leave your headlights on overnight, or there may be a loose wire in the system. Eventually, a car battery will expire from age.

A dashboard light should illuminate when your battery has an issue. You can connect your battery to another car’s with jumper cables to jump-start the system.

2. The Ignition Switch Is Faulty

When the ignition switch isn’t working, you’ll turn your key and the car won’t start, even with battery power. To test your ignition, turn the key to the start position all the way clockwise. Normally, the engine will start, and the key will wind to the part of the ignition that says “ON” once you let go.

The key should still turn to “ON” even without the engine starting. If your dashboard doesn’t light up by the time the key reaches that position, then the ignition is the likely culprit.

3. The Starter Is Defective

When you turn on the ignition, the starter, which is attached to the battery, receives the cue to crank the engine. If the starter begins to malfunction, you’ll hear a clicking noise when you turn the key.

Unlike the battery and ignition, the starter is harder to see and analyze. A mechanic at an auto repair shop can identify if the starter is the reason your vehicle won’t start.
