One of the many aspects you’ll need to consider when shopping for a tractor is the type of transmission you want. You can either select a standard manual gear transmission or a hydrostatic transmission (HST). Below is a brief overview of these two transmission systems, as well as information on which system may be best for your needs.

What Are Gear Transmissions?

A tractor with a gear transmission features a gearbox to change the speed and direction of travel. While the complexity of the gearbox can vary from vehicle to vehicle, they typically feature a number of forward speeds and a reverse speed. The gears must be shifted manually by the driver, who must depress a clutch to change gears.

What Are Hydrostatic Transmissions?

Hydrostatic transmissions (HST) are controlled by one pedal, forward and reverse. They provide a range of speeds, and drivers do not need to manually shift gears in order to reach them. Drivers can instantly shift from forward to reverse. HSTs have no clutch, but they have a neutral position that is used to start the tractor and idle.

Which Option Is Best for You?

HSTs are preferred by many drivers due to their ease of use. Because the tractor’s direction and speed can be completely controlled by foot, the driver’s hands are freed up to focus on other tasks such as steering and running the loader. This type of transmission is ideal for smaller-scale tasks that require frequent use of a front loader, such as lawn and garden chores.

Gear transmission is typically the better choice for high-level farming tasks that require a specific speed, like tilling, seeding, and plowing. This is because you can select a gear and lock the tractor to one speed. Gear transmissions are also better at navigating rough, hilly terrain.
