Buying a car offers both freedom and convenience, but it also requires responsibility. Knowing how to maintain your vehicle will help you avoid costly breakdowns. In addition to finding a dedicated auto mechanic, here are a few maintenance tips to incorporate into your routine.

4 Car Maintenance Habits to Embrace

1. Review Your Owner’s Manual

Whether you’ve purchased a new or used model, knowing how your vehicle operates will help you determine when to schedule auto service. Review the owner’s manual and note recommendations such as when to schedule oil changes, radiator flushes, air filter swaps, and tire rotations.

2. Schedule Oil Changes

Replacing the motor oil keeps your engine clean, lubricated, and safe from dirt and debris that can corrode metal components. Regular oil changes will also improve gas mileage and performance when on the road. Have an auto mechanic change your oil every 3,000 miles.

3. Check Fluids

Kailua-Kona-Auto-MechanicIn addition to oil, your automobile requires a variety of fluids to function properly. Every month, pop your hood and check the coolant, transmission, and washer fluid levels.

Pull out the dipstick and observe the markings to check the oil and transmission reserves. Clean oil will be light brown, while clean transmission fluid will be red or light brown. Check coolant and washer fluid by locating the reserve tanks and removing the caps.

4. Monitor Tire Pressure

A flat tire or blowout when you’re driving on the freeway can be dangerous, not to mention stressful and expensive to fix. To avoid having to call for an emergency tow, check your tire pressure monthly with a tire gauge. Add air as necessary to stay within the manufacturer’s pressure recommendations.
