When you have a swimming pool, much of your summer is spent cooling off and splashing around with family and friends. Before the fun can start, though, you need to ensure your pool is safe for kids. Follow these three tips to enjoy a peaceful, hazard-free swimming season.

How to Enforce Pool Safety

1. Install a Pool Fence

To reduce the chance of pool-related accidents, children should be supervised at all times. Sometimes, though, especially during large gatherings, a child may wander out by the pool alone. Prevent little ones from entering the water unsupervised by installing a pool fence. If your pool is in-ground, have the fence installed around the entire pool area. If your pool is above ground, it should be around the steps and ladder.

To prevent kids from climbing the fence, look for one that’s at least four feet high (six feet or higher is best). Also, pick one with a self-closing and self-latching gate that opens away from the water. Keep the gate closed whenever you’re not using the pool.

2. Get Rescue & First Aid Equipment

Regularly inspect your safety equipment to ensure it’s in good working order, and keep the first aid kit stocked with essentials like adhesive bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, cold compresses, and non-latex gloves.

3. Establish Pool Rules

Make sure everyone who uses your pool understands basic pool safety rules. In particular, they should know to avoid running near the pool, pushing people into the pool, dunking people underwater, and diving into shallow water.

In addition, kids should know to never swim without an adult watching. You should also instruct older kids and adults to store floats, toys, cleaning supplies, and any other items away from the pool when not in use; when objects remain on the pool deck, they pose a serious slip hazard.
