Keeping your skylights clean can be challenging. From layers of pollen to loose bits of dust, each particle that accumulates discolors the material and dims the light. Thankfully, the following steps can help you get the most out of these features.

How to Clean Skylights

1. Loosen Particles

Start by removing the first layer of buildup. Secure a telescopic pole with an attachment to avoid having to climb on the roof. Locate the duster and gently brush it over the glass to loosen particles and prepare the window for cleaning.

2. Apply Soap

Combine a mild detergent and warm water in a large bucket. Attach the mop to the pole and soak it in the solution. Gently scrub the surface of the glass, being careful not to apply too much pressure, as that could damage the skylight.

3. Wipe Clean

skylightSpray the mop thoroughly with a hose and soak it in a bucket of clean water. Scrub it over the glass to rinse the bubbles.

Swap out the mop for a squeegee and wipe the skylight from top to bottom to prevent smears. Continue along until the surface appears dry.

4. Remove Screen

The only way you’re going to access the inside of the skylight is to remove the screen. Once it’s down, vacuum the material and dust it with a soft brush to loosen debris. Rinse it with a hose before setting it out to dry.
