You rely on your HVAC system to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. But sometimes it may not function properly, leaving you too hot or too cold. Performing regular maintenance tasks, like changing the filters, can keep it working, but some of the following problems require professional HVAC service to repair the system.

What Are Common Reasons for HVAC Issues?

1. Water Leaks

Cooling your home requires removing moisture from the air, and as such, the HVAC system creates condensation. When your system is working well, that moisture drains outside, but clogged or broken pipes and broken condensate pans can cause water leaks inside. You might be able to clear a clog with a wet-dry vacuum, but ongoing water leaks require professional HVAC service to prevent damage to your system and home.

2. Dirty System Components

While a dirty filter can make the system less efficient and potentially cause malfunctions, other parts also need regular cleaning and maintenance. Over time, dirt and debris can collect on the condenser coils, reducing efficiency and the ability for the system to heat and cool properly.

Left unchecked, this buildup can also lead to corrosion in the coils. When this happens, they usually need to be replaced. Regular maintenance and cleaning of the coils can prevent this from happening.

3. Power Problems

HVAC serviceWhen the HVAC system doesn’t heat properly, it could be due to an ignition problem. Ignition issues can come from burned out pilot lights, electrical problems, or a damaged ignitor. A blown fuse or tripped circuit can also cause the HVAC system to fail.

This is often due to a problem that makes it work harder than usual, such dirty ducts that block airflow. When the HVAC works hard, it puts more load on the circuit breaker, causing it to shut down. Because of the safety concerns involved with these issues, HVAC service is necessary to determine where the problem is and how to fix it.
