When you need a new residential HVAC system, the two most common types are ductless and ducted. While ducted systems have long been favored in the HVAC industry, ductless units have distinct benefits. Find out how they measure up below before deciding which to install in your home.

Ducted

Also called central air conditioning, this type of residential HVAC uses a single AC unit. It cools air before pumping it through the ducts—tubes used to transport conditioned air throughout a building.

The unit is usually installed outside of your home, making it unobtrusive. Only indoor vents provide any sign of their presence.

Because ducted systems are so common, many HVAC specialists are well-versed in installing and repairing them, so they’re usually cheaper to maintain.

If your home already has ducting installed and you don’t plan on removing it, you can save a lot on installation costs by having a new unit hooked up to the existing ductwork.

Ducted systems also tend to be better at controlling humidity because the cool surface of the ductwork helps condense moisture in the air.

Ductless

residential hvacAlso called a mini-split system, ductless air conditioning involves small individual units installed within each room in your home, eliminating the need for ductwork. It can control the temperature in each room individually or even in conjunction with central air conditioning to cool areas that get unusually warm.

The rooms you want air-conditioned will determine the number of units needed rather than the cost of ducts, operations, and installation for an entire home. Therefore, ductless units tend to be less expensive to install than a central system.

ENERGY STAR®-certified ductless units can also be as much as 60% more efficient than ducted systems, so you’ll save on energy and electricity costs.
