Electrocardiograms (EKG) allow doctors to record and analyze electrical activity in the heart. They can help diagnose heart disease, rhythm disorders, evidence of heart attack, and investigate basic symptoms of heart complications. If your physician prescribes one, you may have a few questions. Below is a helpful guide so that you know what to expect.

A Guide to EKG Testing

How to Prepare

EKGs don’t have rigorous preparation requirements. Instead, make sure you’re comfortable and avoid drinking cold water or exercising before the test. You should also send the laboratory a list of medications you’re taking. The electrodes must stick securely to your chest, so make sure you don’t apply any lotions or powders beforehand. Shower the morning of to remove any debris, and then wear comfortable clothing.

Before

The physician may or may not ask you to change into a hospital gown if your clothes interfere with the test. Patients that have hair on their chest may need to shave patches so that the electrodes can stick to the skin. Then, you’ll discuss any symptoms of heart complications with the physician or technician and lie down on a table.

During

physician-dothanEKG testing is a painless procedure. Technicians will secure up to 12 sensors on your chest and limbs. Then, they will connect them to a monitor with wires. Once connected, they’ll detect, transmit, and record your heartbeat and electrical activity in the heart. You must stay still and avoid talking so that you don’t interfere with results. The test only takes a few minutes, and then you can discuss any questions after it finishes.

After

Your physician will examine the results within a day or two. They’ll look at the heart rate and rhythm for evidence of heart attack, structural issues with the chambers and walls of your heart, or problems with blood and oxygen flow.

Once they diagnose any conditions, they’ll recommend lifestyle changes to preserve your cardiovascular health, including healthy eating and regular exercise. In severe cases, they may recommend surgery or other procedures to repair the heart.
