If you drive a lot for work or are planning a long road trip this summer, finding ways to combat back pain on the go is critical. Sitting in the same position for hours at a time can lead to stiff, aching muscles. Use this helpful guide to learn a few tips for back pain management on the road.

How to Address Back Pain in the Car

1. Adjust Your Environment

Small tweaks to your seat angle and steering wheel position can help immensely. Your seat back should be angled so that it makes contact with your back all the way from the tailbone to the shoulders.

If the seat is too far back or forward, you’ll be forced to strain your neck and back, creating extra tension. Adjust the seat depth and steering wheel angle so that your elbows are close to a 90-degree angle when resting at the 10 and two positions.

2. Use Your Left Foot for Stability

back painWhen you’re sitting in a chair, your feet can stabilize your lower body and take some of the load off your back. In a car, your right foot is occupied with the brake and gas pedal.

However, you can press your left foot firmly on the car floor, creating a 90-degree angle with your thigh and lower leg. This brings some stability to the lower body and can reduce the likelihood of back strain.

3. Take Breaks

No matter how good your posture is, your body needs movement to stimulate muscles and prevent stiffness. On long trips, aim to stop every two to three hours. When you do, devote a few minutes to jogging in place, walking, and stretching. You’ll keep back pain at bay and feel more alert for the drive ahead.
