The last situation you want on a blistering summer day is an air conditioner that’s blowing out hot air. There are a lot of reasons why this common problem occurs, ranging from minor leaks to major component issues. While an HVAC service is often required to fix your A/C, the first step is diagnosing the problem. Below, learn why this problem may be occurring.

Why Is My A/C Blowing Hot Air?

1. Incorrectly Set Thermostat

If your home’s HVAC unit has heating and cooling capabilities, make sure the thermostat is set to “cool.” It’s easy to toggle this switch inadvertently, so check that your thermostat is correctly positioned before moving on to other possible issues. Also, make sure the fan is set to “auto” and not “on.” The “on” setting causes the fan to continuously blow, even if the air is not being cooled.

2. Restricted Airflow

Hot air from outside the home is blown over evaporator coils, which contains refrigerant to cool the air before sending it into your home. When airflow is restricted, such as by a soiled air filter, the evaporator coils become too cold and freeze over. This can actually result in the air coming out of your vents to feel a lot warmer than it would if the unit was functioning normally.

3. Clogged Outdoor Condenser

HVAC servicesAlong with indoor components, A/C units also use outdoor condensers. These condensers pull in warm outdoor air, cool and purify it, and circulate it throughout the house. But to do so properly, they must be clear of plant debris, dirt, and other materials that can block the flow of air into the device. Take care when performing lawn care around the unit, particularly when it comes to grass clippings. Also, make sure the condenser isn’t blocked by lawn furniture, leaves, or other yard items.

4. Low Refrigerant

Insufficient refrigerant levels in your evaporator coils can also cause issues. In this case, the problem could be a leak in the refrigerant line, as the substance circulates through a closed system and doesn’t normally change in volume unless there is a problem. While refrigerant can be recharged, the issue will continue until you receive HVAC services to repair the leak.
