Getting pulled over is common in Connecticut. Police officers regularly use traffic violations as a way to find re-arrest warrants. While officers have authority when responding to infractions, you have rights that need to be upheld. If you’re arrested, bail agents are always available to restore your freedom fast.

What Rights Do You Have When Stopped by Police?

1. To Remain Silent

Police officers will try to keep you calm by engaging you in friendly conversation. They may even say that they’re willing to let you off with a warning rather than a ticket. However, this is a tactic used to get you to cooperate. The more they can get you to talk, the more likely you are to make an accidental admission.

While you shouldn’t be rude to the officer—as that can quickly turn a warning into a ticket—tell them you’re invoking your right to remain silent. Politely respond to their orders for your driver’s license, registration, and insurance.

2. To Not Be Searched

Police officers don’t have the right to search your vehicle over a traffic infraction. They’re only allowed to look at what’s in their immediate view—you, the passenger seats, the dashboard, and the ashtray.

But there are instances where they will be allowed to search your vehicle. If they see incriminating evidence in their immediate field of vision like drugs, open alcohol containers, or weapons, they can inspect the car more thoroughly.

Officers also look for suspicious movements. Suddenly lowering your shoulders will indicate to them that you’re attempting to hide something, which gives them the right to search.

Bail AgentsYou may also be asked to step out of your vehicle and be subjected to a pat-down. Follow their instructions. They’ll search for contraband and anything that feels like a weapon. In the most likely case, they’ll find and pull out your cellphone. However, they can’t search it without your consent or a warrant.

3. To Refuse a Breathalyzer Test

It’s not illegal to refuse a breathalyzer test in Connecticut, but your license will be suspended for six months. The consequences become more severe with every offense.

4. To Legal Representation

If you’re arrested for possession or a DUI, you have the right to a lawyer. Do not answer questions or sign documents without your attorney present. With the help of a bail agent, you can await your day in court at home rather than behind bars.
