Commercial truck drivers should know how to perform minor repairs and replace truck parts to keep the vehicle safe. However, there are other steps beyond repairs you should take to reduce the chances of having an accident. If you’re new to the 18-wheeler, here’s a guide to help enhance safety during the drive.

Do:

Create extra space.

Due to their bigger size and weight, commercial trucks take longer to stop and make maneuvers than other vehicles do. By maintaining a proper following distance, you can react quickly when hazards arise and have more time to stop safely.

Hang back one second for every 10 feet of your truck’s length—this typically equates to a four-second following distance. Add a second if you’re traveling over 40 mph, and double the calculated following time if the driving conditions are hazardous.

Plan the route.

Although you can use a GPS for directions, take the time to map the drive before leaving. Use mapping tools and road condition reports to identify the most direct route while avoiding safety hazards, like rough roads and steep inclines.

If a weather report shows a chance of severe weather, such as heavy snow or rain, time the drive to avoid these conditions. If these obstacles are unavoidable, give yourself extra time to move through these sections at a safer, slower pace.

Don’t:

Skip sleep.

truck partDrowsiness significantly impairs reaction time and may cause you to fall asleep behind the wheel. To avoid this risk, get about seven to eight hours of sleep within a 24-hour period. If you’re sleeping in the cabin, promote quality rest by wearing an eye cover, using earplugs, and resting on a pillow that supports proper body alignment.

Overload the trailer.

Exceeding the trailer’s weight limit capacity will overheat the engine, wear the brakes, blow the tires, and place additional stress on other truck parts. Always distribute the cargo evenly to avoid these issues. Before departing, use a truck scale to ensure each axle isn’t holding more weight than what’s recommended for your vehicle, then make any necessary adjustments.
